By Zoila Palma: Belmopan came alive with the flavors of Taiwan on September 9, as the Embassy of Taiwan in Belize hosted the 2025 Taiwan Cuisine Show at the Art Box.
The event highlighted the richness of Taiwanese food and culture, featuring live cooking demonstrations, tastings, and performances.
Popular Taiwanese restaurants in Belize, including Simple Life, Formosa, and Mama Chen, joined visiting master chefs Pan Tai-Ju and Chan Chih-Chiang to showcase traditional dishes as part of the “2025 International Tour of Taiwan Gourmet Cuisine.”
Guests sampled authentic specialties while learning about the history and artistry behind Taiwan’s culinary heritage.
Taiwan’s Ambassador to Belize, Lily Li-Wen Hsu, welcomed attendees and emphasized that food serves as “a bridge that connects people, strengthens cultural ties, and creates shared experiences.”
Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam, who delivered remarks at the event, congratulated the Embassy of Taiwan for bringing “a taste of Taiwan” to Belize.
In her speech, the Governor General reflected on the importance of diverse and resilient food traditions. “Unlike the internet where I have to rely on pictures to imagine the taste of unknown food, here we all have the opportunity to eat food prepared by experts,” she said.
The Governor General also encouraged Belizeans to be more adventurous in their eating habits. “Many of us are not adventurous eaters. We would rather just eat food containing rice, wheat and maize or pork, chicken and beef. This is not a very exciting or resilient way of eating,” she noted.
Drawing on history, the Governor General reminded the audience of Belize’s food heritage. “Did you know that our ancestors were hunters and gatherers for 90 percent of our prehistory? That means our diet was based on many types of plants and animals. That is what is called a food resilient diet,” Dame Froyla said.
She also highlighted the importance of local produce in building resilience. “We should eat more ground foods such as cassava, coco and purple yam that grow in poor soil and in inclement weather,” she added.
The event concluded with applause for the chefs and hosts, as guests left with a deeper appreciation for Taiwan’s cultural exchange with Belize.
