By Aaron Humes: Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde says “we are close as we can get” to ending the current labour dispute with the joint trade unions after six weeks of back-and-forth.
“This is it. We are hopeful that the membership will see that we’ve acted in good faith, will see that we have delivered on their demands and their requests, will see that we are doing our best. And we didn’t get here overnight; it took us a while for us to reach this point, where we can say, okay, this is what are going to be able to do, and this is the timeline and we spelt out to them very clearly the timeline in terms of how we are going to get things done over the next two years,” he told reporters this afternoon at the conclusion of a meeting at the ITVET grounds in Belize City.
Admittedly, he would have said the same six weeks and two proposals ago, but it depends on the feelings of union members who will now vote on the proposal. But Hyde described the meeting as a “great discussion” and reiterated Government’s commitment to the salary adjustment and return of frozen increments, among other proposals.
Importantly, nothing in the proposal is tied to each other; per Hyde, it is not a case of “you have to do this to get this,” but ensuring that the work of the committees established between the negotiators must continue including cost savings, revenue enhancement and especially pension reform, and be expedited where possible.
At this point, Hyde says he is “hoping for good news” and “praying for the best,” even wishing that an all-union demonstration for Saturday, June 28 in Belize City is postponed.
