By Aaron Humes: Port Loyola area representative Gilroy Usher Sr offered some small business advice to participants in the Mahogany Street Marketplace.
A small business owner himself, Usher reiterated his humble beginnings in contrast to the help being offered to these vendors. He also noted that the Marketplace has a good location and called on owners to continue their hard work.
Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde made sure to boast that Mahogany Street is the best street in all the land – a corridor where the best food can be had for reasonable prices, and a lure to tourists visiting the Old Capital.
Hyde added that even with headaches over offering new spaces along the strip, Mahogany will be “the envy of the country.” And with Central Government and the municipal governments working together, much more can be done.
Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler hailed the overcoming of skepticism among vendors, “as these projects would not work if people were not at the center of them.” He also noted that prices seem to be at their highest in this area.
Nonetheless, the Old Capital is a tourist destination as much as the more fancied ones, said Mahler, and with development plans underway it deserves as much attention.
