By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño says the Government of Belize is moving forward with a $450 million upgrade of the Port of Belize cargo port, a project that will also include the development of a cruise port facility.

Speaking on the project, the Prime Minister said the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) blueprint has already been submitted following planning led by Dr. Gilbert Canton, with support from an international consulting firm. The government says the project has received environmental approval and will now move into the development phase.

The proposed upgrade is expected to modernize cargo handling facilities and expand port capacity, improving efficiency for shipping and logistics operations in Belize. The project also includes plans for a new cruise port facility, which officials say could further expand Belize’s tourism sector.

Prime Minister Briceño added that the development will also bring economic activity and infrastructure improvements to the Port Loyola area, where the port is located. The project is expected to create jobs during both the construction and operational phases while improving services for businesses and other users of the port.

The Port of Belize serves as the country’s primary cargo gateway, handling the majority of Belize’s imports and exports, making the modernization project one of the most significant planned infrastructure investments in the maritime sector in recent years.
