By Aaron Humes: Tobacco use is as legal and as widespread as they come – but has no regulation, according to the Government of Belize, especially concerning “sale, packaging, marketing, or use of tobacco products.”
That is about to change, as Cabinet gave its endorsement of a Bill to be introduced at the National Assembly to reduce tobacco-related harm and align with international standards.
Today’s Cabinet Brief reports, “The bill is comprehensive and will regulate not only traditional tobacco products but also novel tobacco products. It will introduce strong regulatory measures across tobacco product packaging and labelling, advertising and promotion, protection of youth and vulnerable populations, smoking restrictions in public spaces, and accountability of the tobacco industry.”
Most, if not all, drugs are currently governed by the Misuse of Drugs Act and related legislation.
