By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says Government has moved to eliminate GST from residential electricity bills as part of its response to the rising cost of living.
During Tuesday’s State of the Nation Address, Briceño said the measure will benefit approximately 100,000 residential customers of Belize Electricity Limited.
The Prime Minister also announced that the Public Utilities Commission has approved an expansion in the number of BEL customers who qualify for the lower social rate of electricity.
The announcements come amid heightened public concern over electricity costs and recent load shedding.
Briceño said Government recognizes the financial pressure being experienced by households and is taking steps to provide relief.
He also highlighted GST free shopping days before the new school year, which Government estimates provided more than $1 million in relief.
Christmas GST tax free weekends, according to Briceño, provide Belizeans with an additional $5 million in savings.
The Prime Minister argued that these measures also encourage Belizeans to spend locally instead of taking their purchases across the border.
