By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Government of Belize intends to introduce legislation aimed at strengthening oversight of the vehicle rental industry following concerns that rented vehicles are being used to facilitate robberies and other serious crimes.
Minister of National Security, Energy and Ports Michel Chebat announced the proposal during Sunday’s emergency police briefing.
Under the proposed changes, rental companies would be required to maintain accurate records of individuals renting vehicles, including current photographic identification.
The government also intends to introduce restrictions aimed at preventing rented vehicles from being operated by individuals who are not designated as authorized drivers.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith supported the proposal, revealing that investigators have encountered numerous cases in which rental vehicles were allegedly used during criminal operations.
She specifically cited the October 28 armed robbery at Julie’s Used Clothing in Orange Walk Town, confirming that the vehicle used in that crime had been rented.
Police have since charged Teashuan Kalym Jones with participation in criminal activity in association with a gang in connection with his alleged role in providing the vehicle used during the robbery.
The proposed legislation is intended to improve accountability and make it easier for investigators to identify individuals connected to vehicles used in criminal activities.
The government has not announced when the proposed changes will be introduced in the National Assembly.
