By Breaking Belize News Staff: Minister of National Security, Energy and Ports Michel Chebat has announced plans to establish a National Security Advisory Committee involving representatives from several sectors of Belizean society.
Speaking during Sunday’s emergency police briefing, Chebat said the committee would include representatives of churches, nongovernmental organizations, the media and the political opposition.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader response to escalating gang violence and recent murders.
Chebat emphasized that fighting crime cannot be left exclusively to the Police Department and that meaningful progress requires participation from communities and institutions across the country.
The minister also announced plans to strengthen collaboration between the Police Department, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the National Forensic Laboratory.
He explained that closer coordination throughout criminal investigations could improve the quality of evidence presented in court and increase the likelihood of successful prosecutions.
Chebat also committed to engaging area representatives from communities affected by violence, including representatives of the opposition United Democratic Party.
The government has not announced when the proposed advisory committee will be established.
