Government of Belize to host consultations on climate change

By Zoila Palma:  The Government of Belize will be hosting a series of National Consultations from January 19 to 30, 2026, aimed at gathering public and stakeholder input to help shape how the country prepares for and responds to the impacts of climate change.

The consultations are being led by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management, through the National Climate Change Office (NCCO). This initiative is possible through collaboration with the Protected Areas Conservation Trust and the Ministry of Economic Transformation and forms part of the National Adaptation Planning process supported by the Green Climate Fund Readiness Project, “Enabling Activities for the Formulation and Implementation of a Multisectoral National Adaptation Plan (MNAP) for Belize.”

Belize’s National Adaptation Plan will serve as a long-term guide to help the country reduce climate risks and strengthen resilience across key sectors that are critical to national development and community well-being. These sectors include health, tourism, agriculture, forest and land use, and human settlements and infrastructure.

As part of the consultancy “Identification of Adaptation Priorities and Development of Belize’s MNAP,” the NCCO, together with the consulting firm Metroeconomica, will be leading a series of national consultations to identify priority climate change adaptation needs, assess climate risks, and gather practical solutions directly from stakeholders across the country.

The consultations form part of a coordinated national effort to strengthen evidence-based planning, improve coordination across sectors, and align climate adaptation actions with Belize’s broader development objectives.

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management encourages all interested stakeholders to actively participate in the upcoming consultation sessions.

Official invitations pertaining to consultation dates, locations, and participation modalities will be shared through official government communication channels.

Bilateral meetings with key sectors will be conducted in the first days of the mission, and the schedule for district consultations will be posted on the NCCO and Ministry Facebook pages.
