By Zoila Palma: The Government of Belize has officially launched a fully modernized Civil Registry and Vital Statistics (CRVS) System.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of E-Governance and the Attorney General’s Ministry, was made possible through strategic financial and technical support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The new CRVS System is a cornerstone of the Government of Belize’s National Digital Agenda and transitions the nation’s vital records from outdated, paper-based processes to a secure, real-time digital platform.
The system modernizes the management of essential records such as births, deaths, marriages, and adoptions, significantly improving efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.
The Ministry noted that the upgraded system will strengthen access to vital documentation for all Belizeans, ensuring citizens can more easily exercise their legal rights and access social services.
By adopting international best practices and advanced technology, the CRVS System also enhances the government’s ability to produce reliable data to support evidence-based policymaking and national planning.
The modernized platform introduces several new features designed to improve public service delivery.
Citizens can now apply for Vital Statistics Unit (VSU) services online, track the status of their applications, and collect certificates from any VSU office nationwide. New security measures include redesigned certificates with scannable QR codes to verify authenticity, as well as fully valid electronic certificates that can be printed by users.
In addition, the CRVS System supports multiple digital payment options, including Ekyash, Belize Bank Bill Payment, and credit cards.
The platform is also integrated with the Belize Health Information System to streamline birth and death registration, and with the passport and Social Security systems to enable real-time identity verification.
