By Zoila Palma: Government officials, regional policymakers, technical experts, and international partners gathered in Belize City this week for the Regional Workshop on Strengthening Digital Resilience, held at the Grand Resort and Residences from June 2-3.
The workshop, supported by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the European Union (EU), seeks to strengthen regional cooperation in protecting critical government data and ensuring the continuity of public services across the Caribbean.
Discussions on the opening day focused on the technical foundations needed to build resilient digital systems, including infrastructure, data protection, and governance frameworks. A key topic was the Data Embassy model, which allows countries to securely store encrypted copies of critical government data in partner nations while retaining full sovereignty over that information. Participants also examined the role of data centers, legal considerations, and international best practices that could be adapted to the Caribbean region.
The workshop continues with high-level policy discussions involving regional leaders and senior government officials on strengthening partnerships and safeguarding data sovereignty.
The event is expected to conclude with the review and signing of the Declaration of Belize City, reaffirming a shared commitment to advancing digital resilience across the Caribbean.
