By Aaron Humes: The upcoming referendum on legalizing marijuana on Caye Caulker has sparked discussion among government Ministers bracing for its repercussions.
Speaking separately to reporters, Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Attorney General, believes the referendum will provide valuable insight into the sentiments of the Caye Caulker community, while colleague Minister of the Blue Economy and area representative Andre Perez allows that the referendum could serve as a litmus test to gauge the sentiment of the entire country.
Fonseca noted that the outcome of the referendum will help guide the government’s position on the issue.
Perez also highlighted potential benefits, such as alleviating issues faced by tourists who unknowingly bring marijuana into the country. However, he noted that there are also concerns about the cost of the referendum and potential precedents it may set.
The discussion around marijuana legalization raises questions about the current laws and their enforcement. Perez wondered if the government should rethink its approach to tourists found with small amounts of marijuana, considering it’s decriminalized for certain amounts.
The referendum be held on October 8.
