By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Government plans to cut spending elsewhere in the budget to pay for new cost of living relief, according to Prime Minister John Briceño.
The PM said Cabinet is working closely with the Financial Secretary to find savings, which would then be redirected to programs aimed at easing the financial pressure on Belizean families.
“I’m very excited about what we discussed. We discussed a number of issues in Cabinet,” Briceño said in Corozal on Friday.
While Cabinet has publicly highlighted its focus on affordability this week, no specific measures, amounts or programs have been released. Critics say the plan shared so far offers little substance, as the ruling party faces accusations of being out of touch with everyday struggles.
Briceño said an announcement will come once the finer details are worked out.
The relief measures are expected to take effect in November 2026 and run through March 2027.
With diesel prices nearly doubling this year, food costs rising and BEL asking the PUC to raise the surcharge on power bills, many Belizeans will be watching closely to see what the package contains.
