Government forgave 80 million dollars in fuel taxes to ease pump prices, Briceño says

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): As Belizeans continue reacting to rising fuel costs, Prime Minister John Briceño says government is trying to strike a balance between fuel relief and maintaining critical public services.

According to Briceño, government has already forgone approximately 80 million dollars in fuel tax revenues in an attempt to keep pump prices lower than they otherwise would be. However, he stressed that government cannot afford to absorb the full cost of global fuel increases.

The Prime Minister explained that major national programs including housing, education, land initiatives and National Health Insurance require continued funding, making it difficult to further reduce fuel taxes without impacting social services.

Briceño also revealed that government is reviewing spending cuts and budget adjustments in an effort to manage rising costs while continuing to support Belizean families.

Despite the explanations, many motorists and working-class Belizeans remain frustrated as transportation and living expenses continue climbing nationwide.
