Government confirms Alexis Rosado’s immediate resignation from ICJ team

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Ambassador Alexis Rosado has resigned as Belize’s Co-Agent before the International Court of Justice, following growing public pressure over his continued service while facing criminal proceedings.

The Government of Belize announced the resignation on Monday, October 26, confirming that it takes effect immediately.

Earlier Monday, Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton publicly called on Rosado to voluntarily step aside until the criminal proceedings against him are resolved.

Panton argued that temporary withdrawal from public responsibilities during serious criminal proceedings should not be viewed as a declaration of guilt but as a measure of accountability.

Her statement questioned whether Rosado should continue representing Belize in such an important international legal matter.

The Government’s announcement confirmed that Rosado had resigned but did not explain his reasons for stepping down or establish whether the decision was connected to Panton’s appeal.

Rosado faces criminal proceedings involving allegations of sexual offences against a minor. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

The Government said it would make no further comment on the matter out of respect for the judicial process.

It also sought to reassure the public that Belize’s cases before the ICJ remain on track.

With written submissions already filed, the legal proceedings will continue under Ambassador Assad Shoman and the remaining legal team.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international law.
