By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Youth and Sports is taking steps to revitalize sporting infrastructures across the country. Minister Anthony Mahler, who oversees Tourism, Youth, Sports, and Diaspora Relations, conducted a site visit to assess the state of the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town, accompanied by Prime Minister and Orange Walk Central area representative John Briceño and adviser Jamie Briceño.
This assessment is part of a broader initiative to prioritize repairs of physical structures and revitalize programming in sports. The government aims to develop a comprehensive plan to upgrade facilities and support athletes nationwide, starting with Marion Jones Sporting Complex, MCC Grounds, Rogers Stadium and Berger Field in Belize City.
The Ministry’s efforts focus on assessing and repairing sporting facilities to ensure they meet international standards and developing initiatives to promote sports development and support athletes.
Mahler’s vision for sports development emphasizes the importance of quality infrastructure and programming. In a wide-ranging press conference this week he spoke of a new start for youth and sporting development in Belize: “But we have to blow up everything and start over, pretty much. And I’m being honest, I mean all kind of people will say all kind of things, but it has not been working… I don’t believe in just participating and taking a beating on their own. And anywhere and whichever discipline you want to go. We have to be able to compete. … It’s just because there hasn’t really been that will and organizational capacity for us to be able to focus on sports. I mean, for the past, as long as I know, it has been lip service. Well the talking [done] now. We will put [our] money where our mouth is. I said what I said!”
