Government caught burning files in the bushes—Activist blows the whistle

Posted: Saturday, June 7, 2025. 6:03 am CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A viral Facebook livestream by activist Nigel Petillo has ignited serious concerns over the handling of potentially sensitive government documents after he discovered a fire pit filled with charred papers near the George Price Highway.

Petillo stumbled upon what he described as an illegal dump site in a bushy area near Camalote Village, where paperwork bearing official government headers was actively being burned. In the livestream, visibly angry and disheartened, he questioned the motives behind such disposal methods: “You can’t do this here. You don’t have to do this. How will you allow all of this?”

The activist expressed disbelief and disappointment, claiming the act disrespected the community and could be an attempt to quietly dispose of sensitive information.

In response, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and E-Governance issued a press release stating that the documents were outdated, dating back to 2010–2012, and unrelated to any ongoing projects. The Ministry said the files were part of an old project and had no connection to the Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) program.

However, Petillo remains skeptical. “Why not just go to the dump? Why burn it like this in secrecy?” he asked, noting that he discovered technical documents, work contracts, and reports among the ashes.

The Ministry admitted the disposal process was not properly followed and confirmed an internal review is now underway.
