By Aaron Humes: At this week’s Cabinet meeting, Minister of Education, Science, and Technology Oscar Requeña presented a comprehensive situational analysis regarding the food, health, and nutrition conditions in schools to the Cabinet. Following this briefing, the Cabinet approved the enactment of the Belize School Food and Nutrition Policy.
This newly developed policy serves as a vital framework to ensure that every student in Belize has access to nutritious food during school hours. It aims to implement rigorous regulations and monitoring systems designed to foster school environments that promote healthy behaviors among young learners.
The formulation of this policy was a collaborative effort, shaped by consultations with key stakeholders, including educators, health professionals, and community leaders. This collaborative approach ensures that the policy is not only effective but also considers the diverse needs of students throughout the country.
Additionally, the Belize School Food and Nutrition Policy will strengthen the National Healthy Start Feeding Program, which currently serves over 15,000 students.
