By Horace Palacio: The Government of Belize has approved the forgiveness of $54 million in medical debts owed by patients to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). This move aims to ease the financial burden on Belizeans, particularly those who struggled to pay their hospital bills during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard made the announcement during Friday’s parliamentary session, emphasizing the government’s commitment to accessible and equitable healthcare.
“This includes debts accrued during the COVID years, a time when many of our citizens faced unprecedented challenges,” Bernard stated, highlighting that the debt write-off covers the period from March 2009 to April 2022.
The move aligns with the government’s Plan Belize initiative, which prioritizes healthcare accessibility and financial relief for Belizeans. While this decision brings relief to thousands of families, the government is expected to outline future healthcare financing strategies to ensure the hospital remains financially stable.
