By Zoila Palma: In honor of Nurses Week, the Government of Belize has unveiled a $4 million nursing retention package aimed at supporting public health nurses, who make up 57% of the country’s nursing workforce.
The package will be implemented in three phases, beginning with immediate increases in uniform allowances—from $300 to $500—and the introduction of a 10% specialist allowance for all nurses, along with performance-based salary increments.
Starting in 2026, nurses will also receive a $200 monthly hazard allowance and a $100 overnight allowance for every 10 consecutive night shifts.
By 2027, additional benefits will include a $150 motor vehicle maintenance allowance, $75 telephone allowance, and a $350 availability allowance for nursing leaders. Nurses serving in rural areas will also receive a $150 rural allowance.
The government described the package as a significant investment in retaining and valuing the country’s frontline healthcare workers.
