By Zoila Palma:  The Government of Belize and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the management, protection and restoration of Belize’s freshwater resources and aquatic ecosystems.

The agreement was signed on Thursday, August 13, between TNC Belize and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management.

The MOU establishes a framework for collaboration in watershed planning, monitoring and data collection, public awareness and stakeholder engagement to support the sustainable management of Belize’s freshwater resources. TNC, a global conservation organization, will bring its experience working with governments, communities and partners on freshwater conservation, watershed restoration and climate resilience.

Hannah St. Luce-Martinez, TNC Belize Country Program Director, emphasized the need for coordinated action to protect freshwater ecosystems. “Water doesn’t recognize institutional boundaries. What happens upstream can affect communities downstream and ultimately our coastal and marine ecosystems,” Martinez said.

Martinez added that protecting freshwater requires cooperation across agencies, sectors and communities.

The partnership comes as Belize’s rivers, watersheds and other freshwater ecosystems face growing pressures from flooding, drought, rising temperatures and pollution.

By combining the Government of Belize’s leadership with TNC’s global freshwater conservation expertise, the collaboration aims to strengthen resilience and deliver long-term benefits for both nature and communities.
