By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a spectacular display of endurance and strategy, Goran Gabourel of the Anthony Mahler Digi Alliance Cycling Team won the 100-mile ‘Rumble in the Tropics’ cycling race on Sunday morning, March 23, 2025, besting some of Belize’s biggest names in cycling.
Gabourel crossed the finish line ahead of high-profile competitors like Jyven Gonzalez, Giovanni Lovell, Henry Moreira, Oscar Quiroz, Delton Rojas, Carlton Robinson, and Derrick Chavarria. Chavarria faced persistent bike issues throughout the race, putting him at a disadvantage. They all delivered an impressive performance, earning top ten finishes.
The race kicked off at 8:00 am from the Esso XaiBel Service Station on the Hummingbird Highway in Stann Creek Valley. Cyclists tackled a demanding route that ascended to 2,773 feet above sea level on the Hummingbird Highway before taking the George Price Highway and finishing off in Belize City. The finale was an intense three-lap sprint on Central American Boulevard, where Gabourel’s determination sealed his victory.
With over $15,000 in cash prizes on the line, the ‘Rumble in the Tropics’ proved to be a perfect test race for the grueling 144-mile Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic. Scheduled for April 19, the Cross Country Classic, dating back to 1928, is Belize’s most iconic cycling race, practically covering the entire width of the country from Belize City to San Ignacio and back.
The ‘Rumble’ was made possible by the support of sponsors including Belize Electricity Limited, Belize City Council, Powerade, Crystal, and M&M Engineering.
