By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, a widespread technology outage wreaked havoc across multiple sectors worldwide, impacting airlines, banks, healthcare facilities, and public transit systems.
The incident, attributed to a flawed system update by a cybersecurity firm, led to significant disruptions in operations, USA Today reports.
CrowdStrike, a prominent U.S. cybersecurity company utilized by numerous Fortune 500 firms, identified a defect in one of its recent content updates that affected Microsoft’s Windows Operating System. The firm clarified that the issue was not due to a cyberattack but rather a technical glitch.
“The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,” said a statement from CrowdStrike.
The company’s CEO, George Kurtz, apologized for the disruptions.
Microsoft, meanwhile, said “the underlying cause has been fixed,” but residual impacts will affect some of its Microsoft 365 apps and services.
In the United States, the outage resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights this morning.
Major carriers including American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines halted flights shortly after Microsoft resolved a related cloud-services outage that had also impacted several budget airlines.
Public transit systems in various cities across the U.S. reported varying degrees of disruption.
Internationally, the outage caused disruptions at the London Stock Exchange, substantial train delays in the United Kingdom, a temporary blackout for British broadcaster Sky News, and service cancellations at medical facilities across Europe and the United States.
Airports in Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India also experienced disruptions.
U.S. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the CrowdStrike outage and his team is in touch with the cybersecurity firm, as well as with impacted companies and agencies, according to the White House.
