This year’s theme for Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, “Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information,” highlights the crucial role of critical thinking skills in navigating the increasingly complex digital world.
Digital platforms have dramatically transformed how information is created, shared, and consumed, introducing both new opportunities and challenges.
With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the line between human-generated and AI-generated content has become even more blurred, underscoring the need for individuals to develop new competencies to critically assess and engage with the content they encounter online.
The United Nations recognized the importance of Media and Information Literacy in 2021, declaring an annual MIL Week to promote the dissemination of accurate, timely, and accessible information.
The UN resolution also emphasized the role of MIL in bridging the digital divide and addressing data inequalities that persist globally.
Belize will celebrate with an event hosted by the Belize National Library Service and Information System in collaboration with UNESCO.
Today, the Port Loyola Library will present “Belizean Food Facts or Fiction,” an engaging community event where local youth who participated in the library’s Summer Cooking Program will showcase their culinary skills.
Attendees, including parents and community members, will discuss traditional Belizean recipes while learning about the role of Artificial Intelligence in food and media, offering an interactive, fun way to engage with MIL topics.
This celebration is a reminder that Media and Information Literacy is not just about accessing information, but about using it wisely to promote peace, equality, and freedom of expression in the digital age.
