By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Global Media and Information Literacy Week will be recognized from October 24-31.
The United Nations noted that this year’s theme is The New Digital Frontiers of Information: “Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information”.
Global Media and Information Literacy Week is celebrated to raise awareness and highlight advancements in media and information literacy worldwide.
During this week, stakeholders organize events globally, with UNESCO co-hosting a major conference that unites the media and information literacy community.
Media and Information Literacy equips individuals with the skills to navigate today’s information landscape, enhancing their ability to search, evaluate, and utilize media content effectively.
It promotes understanding of digital rights and ethical considerations, empowering citizens to engage in dialogue, advocate for freedom of expression, and support gender equality and sustainable development.
This initiative is vital for addressing 21st-century challenges such as misinformation, declining trust in media, and the impacts of digital innovations like Artificial Intelligence.
The U.N. noted that emergence of generative artificial intelligence further blurs the lines between human-generated and AI-generated content, requiring new skills and critical thinking.
In 2021, the UN General Assembly officially recognized this week to stress the importance of accessible, reliable, and multilingual information, particularly in bridging the digital divide.
