Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2025: “Minds Over AI” highlights human judgment in the Digital Age

Posted: Friday, October 24, 2025. 3:00 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how information is created and consumed, this year’s Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, observed from October 24 to 31, focuses on the theme “Minds Over AI – MIL in Digital Spaces.”

According to the United Nations, this highlights the urgent need for critical thinking and ethical awareness in an era where algorithms influence news feeds, search results, and even content creation.

MIL equips individuals to recognize and evaluate AI-generated content responsibly, ensuring that human reasoning—not automation—remains at the core of how information is understood and shared.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2021, Global MIL Week promotes factual, accessible, and science-based communication to bridge digital divides and data inequalities worldwide.

The initiative emphasizes that an informed and empowered public is essential to advancing the public good, particularly in an information ecosystem filled with both opportunities and misinformation.

By strengthening people’s ability to critically engage with media and information, the campaign seeks to foster more equitable access to knowledge and communication.

UNESCO continues to lead global efforts in developing media and information literacy competencies, supporting educators, policymakers, and citizens through curriculum design, policy frameworks, and assessment tools.

As people navigate an increasingly digital world—where some are inundated with content while others lack access—MIL provides the foundation for understanding ethical issues, promoting freedom of expression, and using technology to build peace, equality, and dialogue across cultures.
