By Aaron Humes: Since the turn of the century, he has been incarcerated at “Her Majesty’s Pleasure” pending trial for murder (the late Queen Elizabeth II being Belize’s head of state at the time).
On Monday, four days after his 44th birthday, Glenford Logan was released, having been deemed unfit to stand trial by the High Court due to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. He has been the longest-serving and oldest person remanded to the Belize Central Prison at Hattieville.
Logan’s case was called before High Court Justice Nigel Pilgrim but there was no case file to speak of, and based on the written submissions of his attorney Sherigne Rodriguez of the Legal Aid Office, the court agreed that he should be set free and that his Constitutional right to freedom of movement was violated by his 21-year-incarceration due to mental illness.
Logan was turned over into the care and custody of his mother who sat patiently waiting for her son to be released. After 11 a.m., they met on the court verandah and began walking home, together again after 21 years apart.
Logan was arraigned on August 18, 2000, when he was 19, of the murder of security guard Kingsford Obeng in Belize City. Obeng was on duty at a grocery store when his throat was slashed and he died the next morning in hospital.
Rodriguez petitioned the court on October 31 for a stay of proceedings and for bail if found fit to stand trial as the court had previously ordered him held in detention and safe custody until His Majesty’s Pleasure be known.
Psychiatrist Dr Jose Matus diagnosed Logan with schizophrenia on September 6, 2023, reporting that Logan had been hearing voices and his thoughts were disjointed despite supposedly claiming to “feel well” but still having problems with fellow inmates.
It is not known if authorities pursued any other suspect in the killing.
