Based in New York, Puerto Rican writer Giannina Braschi has been awarded the Fray Luis de León Medal for Ibero-American Poetry, awarded by the Encuentro de Poetas Iberoamericanos and sponsored by the City Council of Salamanca. The award ceremony will take place during the first edition of the Encuentro de Poetas Iberoamericanos Nueva York (March 4-7, 2025), as part of the series of meetings led by poet Alfredo Pérez Alencart, this year celebrating its 28th edition.

Braschi’s work is a benchmark of contemporary literature. Among her most iconic titles are the postmodern epic poem The Empire of Dreams (1988), the revolutionary novel in Spanglish Yo-Yo Boing! (1998) and the geopolitical tragicomedy United States of Banana (2011). Her most recent work, Putinoika (2024), explores the rise of frenzy, rage, and plague in the era of Putin and Trump, with the purpose of denouncing contamination, collusion, and deception. Through her literature, Braschi pays homage to the more than sixty million Latinos residing in the United States, and examines the complex sociopolitical, cultural, and linguistic relationships between Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. Her writing, in Spanish, English, and Spanglish, addresses a variety of topics such as immigration, economics, colonialism, love, freedom, creativity, and gratitude. PEN America has described Giannina Braschi as “one of the most revolutionary voices in Latin America,” while the US Library of Congress calls her work “avant-garde, influential, and even revolutionary.”
