By Horace Palacio: This Holy Saturday, all eyes are on the legendary Cross Country Cycling Classic! For over 90 years, this epic race has captured the hearts of Belizeans, showcasing extraordinary athleticism and fueling national pride.
This year, over 100 determined cyclists from Belize and beyond are pushing their limits in the grueling 140-mile round-trip race from Belize City to San Ignacio Town and back. This iconic tradition dates back to 1928 when it began as a quirky way to encourage cycling enthusiasts to travel to cricket matches. While the journey once took 13 grueling hours, modern champions complete the race in under six!
The Cross Country Classic celebrates a wide range of athletes. Awards will be handed out across various categories, including 18-Year-Old, Under 23, Masters, Female, and Elite (best team time), ensuring everyone has a chance at victory.
The race starts promptly at 6:00 am at Mile 1.5 on the George Price Highway near Leslie’s Imports in Belize City. From there, cyclists will race towards San Ignacio Town, turning at Queen Elizabeth Park for the thrilling final leg back to the finish line at Memorial Park. Arrive early to snag those prime viewing spots – this is the nation’s most popular sporting event, and the atmosphere is electric!
