George Street man, who recently came out of jail after 4 years on remand for murder charge, sent back on remand for promoting gang activity by throwing up hand signs in photo he says is 5 years old

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old George Street resident, Jayden Herrera, was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Monday after being arraigned on a charge of promoting a gang-related activity.

Police allege that Herrera appeared in a photograph posted on a Facebook page allegedly linked to him, where he was seen displaying what authorities identified as a GSG gang hand sign. Investigators say the image was used for the purpose of promoting gang activity.

Herrera, who was unrepresented, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge. The court explained that the offense falls under Section 16(2) of the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Act, making it a matter for which the Magistrate’s Court cannot grant bail at this stage.

As a result, Herrera was remanded to prison until June 8, 2026.

After hearing the ruling, Herrera asked the court for permission to speak. He questioned how police could accuse him of promoting gang activity over a picture that was taken more than five years ago with a female relative and later posted on Facebook.

He also told the court that he had only recently been released after spending four years on remand for a murder charge, a case he said ended after the prosecution entered a nolle prosequi. Herrera claimed that since beating that charge, police have been “on his trail.”

Herrera then sought to change his plea, explaining that the photograph in question showed him with a female cousin and was taken years before he was ever charged in the murder matter. He argued that police had never raised any gang-related issue about the photo until now.

However, the Senior Magistrate informed him that, given what he had already told the court, she could not accept a guilty plea under the circumstances.

The court further advised Herrera that he is free to apply to the High Court for bail through an attorney, but the lower court cannot consider bail until he has spent 90 days on remand.

Herrera is scheduled to return to court on June 8, 2026.

Court records note that Herrera had previously been granted immunity in a murder case, but was later charged after failing to testify for the Crown. That murder charge was discontinued in 2025 by way of nolle prosequi.
