George Price Day on Monday, January 15, is second of 14 public and bank holidays in 2024

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: George Price Day on Monday, January 15, is the second of 14 public and bank holidays that are being observed in 2024, according to a press release issued by the Government of Belize Press Office dated November 6.

George Price day is observed in honour of the birthday of Belize’s first Prime Minister, the late Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price, who led the fight to gain Belize’s independence. Price is referred to as the ‘Father of the Nation’ and is a national hero who is also recognized on National Heroes and Benefactors Day, which this year is observed on Monday, March 11, in lieu of Saturday, 9th March.

Price was born on January 15, 1919 first served as First Minister and Premier of Belize from 1961 to 1981 when the country was a colony of Great Britain. After Belize gained independence in 1981, Price served twice as Prime Minister from 1981-1984 and 1989-1993.

All except three holidays of the 14 public and bank holidays are being observed on the actual day this year.

As previously mentioned, National Heroes and Benefactors Day has been moved from Saturday, March 9, to Monday, March 11.

Labour Day will be observed on Monday, April 29 instead of Wednesday, May 1.

Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day is delayed until Monday, October 14 from Saturday, October 12.

In its first publication of the public and bank holidays on October 25, the Government had moved St. George’s Caye Day to Monday, September 9, instead of Tuesday, September 10, but public outcry caused the day to be set back to its original date.
