By Zoila Palma: Today, Belize celebrates National Service Day in honor of the Father of the Nation, the Right Honorable George Cadle Price.
As Belize’s first Premier and founder of the People’s United Party (PUP) and the Belize Times Newspaper, Price is remembered not only for his towering role in politics but also for his humility and commitment to service.
Since his passing on September 19, 2011, Belizeans continue to honor his life-long dedication to nation-building and leadership rooted in service to the people.
Price’s career spanned decades, beginning with his election to the Belize City Town Board and later to the Legislative Council in 1954. He went on to serve as First Minister, Premier, and eventually as the country’s first Prime Minister, leading Belize through the historic fight for independence.
Price firmly defended Belize against Guatemala’s unfounded territorial claim, declaring that “The sovereignty and territorial integrity of Belize is NOT for negotiation, nor for arbitration, and not for litigation.” His steadfast leadership during these defining moments cemented his place in history as the architect of Belize’s independence.
On September 21, 1981, when the Union Jack was lowered and the Belizean flag was raised for the first time, Price’s vision for a free and sovereign nation became reality.
Belizeans remember the moment as one filled with unity and joy, a testament to Price’s tireless struggle for the rights of every citizen to vote, to self-govern, and to live in a country that truly belonged to them. His work also gained international support, with both Caribbean and Central American nations standing with Belize in its independence movement.
Throughout his life, Price received numerous awards, including the Order of National Hero, the nation’s highest honor.
Today, his legacy lives on in the values he instilled—unity, service, and love for country.
National Service Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a call to action for Belizeans to serve their communities in the spirit of George Price. His life continues to inspire generations, reminding the nation that true leadership is measured by service to the people.
