By Aaron Humes: Thus far approximately half of Belizeans have turned up to the polls on this Election Day Wednesday according to the Elections and Boundaries Department but some are taking their time.

50.64 percent of ballots have been cast, almost 100,000, as of 4 p.m.

More females – 51 percent – than males – 48 percent – have cast ballots.

Belize City constituencies, especially those hotly contested such as Albert, Collet, Queen’s Square and Mesopotamia have bettered 50 percent, with Albert coming in at 65 percent.

With less than an hour to go, a traditional “late rush” may swell voter numbers – or, if there is a lack of one, indicate voter apathy.

The polls will close at 6 p.m. or until the last voter has voted, after which counting begins.
