By Aaron Humes: A Sunday afternoon of leisure at Old Belize ended in a deadly shootout, leaving one young man dead and another seriously injured. 25-year-old Gaston Barrow was fatally shot during an apparently targeted attack while riding in a Chevy Malibu with friends. The incident has investigators questioning whether this violence was random or part of a larger cycle of retaliation.
According to police, the incident occurred as the vehicle was approached by a male suspect, who fired multiple shots, resulting in Barrow’s death. Inside the car at the time were another man, Hance Card, who was also shot but managed to survive and is currently hospitalized, and two women who escaped unharmed. After the attack, the shooter fled the scene in a van along the George Price Highway toward Burton Canal Bridge. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from Old Belize to aid their investigation.
ACP Hilberto Romero, head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, stated when asked if the attack was retaliation for previous shootings, “We believe it is gang-related, yes,” and added, “…we believe it is retaliation for the previous shootings.”
In response to whether both men were targeted or if it was a random act, Romero clarified, “They were both in the car, so the shots were fired towards them.”
