Garifuna community reflects on Exile Day Anniversary; Celebrates resilience

By Horace Palacio: Yesterday, Belize’s Garifuna community marked Garifuna Exile Day, a poignant anniversary commemorating 227 years since their ancestors were forcibly removed from their homeland. The National Garifuna Council released a statement highlighting the harrowing journey: “2248 Garifuna souls… leaving behind the remains of 2090 of our brothers and sisters who perished on the island of Balliceaux.”

Garifuna Exile Day stands as a solemn reminder of the Garifuna people’s strength in the face of immense hardship. Despite displacement, their heritage remains vibrant, with traditions and a powerful community spirit carried across generations.

The National Garifuna Council emphasized the importance of unity and remembrance, stating, “Let us stand united in solidarity, ensuring that the sacrifices of our ancestors are never forgotten.”

The statement concluded with a message of reflection and determination: “Yesterday, we reflected on our past with reverence. Today, we look towards the future with determination.”
