By Breaking Belize News Staff: Charleston Christopher Green, a 20-year-old resident of Antelope Street, walked free from a gang-related charge earlier this week after the Chief Magistrate, Deborah Rogers, ruled that there was insufficient evidence to proceed.
Green had been accused of being a member of the George Street Gang (GSG), a well-known group allegedly operating within various areas of Belize City. The charge of “being a member of a gang” was withdrawn for want of prosecution, after police failed to present evidence that satisfied the legal elements of the offense.
In court, the prosecution admitted that the facts presented could not prove Green’s active gang membership, leading to the dismissal of the charge. However, Green was not released, as he remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison for a pending attempted murder charge, for which he has not been granted bail.
According to police, the Gang Intelligence Investigation & Interdiction Unit had monitored the George Street Gang between April 1, 2021, and July 12, 2023, focusing on its structure, territory, and members. Police claimed Green admitted to being a gang member and cited his criminal history—including prior arrests for ammunition possession, burglary, handling stolen goods, and robbery.
Despite the gang charge being dropped, Green’s legal troubles continue, with his attempted murder case still pending trial.
