By Zoila Palma: A research team from Galen University has presented findings on Indigenous participation in higher education across Belize, Guatemala and Costa Rica at a regional forum focused on improving access to tertiary education for ethnocultural groups.
The Indigenous Participation in Higher Education research team, led by Dr. Filiberto Penados of Galen University, participated in the culminating regional forum to present and discuss diagnostic studies conducted in the three countries.
Galen University led the Belizean study, which identified significant differences in higher education participation among the country’s ethnocultural groups.
According to the Belize study, Garifuna have recorded the highest participation rates in higher education since 2000, while Q’eqchi’ participation has remained the lowest. The research found only minimal changes in participation rates across the groups over the period studied.
Key factors affecting participation included financial constraints, geographic and cultural distance, and limited access to culturally responsive psychosocial support within higher education institutions.
Among the study’s recommendations is the establishment of a national system to track higher education participation by ethnicity, which researchers say could provide evidence to guide education policy and institutional practices.
The findings also emphasize the need for Belize’s higher education system to better reflect the country’s cultural, geographic and socioeconomic diversity.
