By Aaron Humes: Galen University, the Belize Defence Force (BDF), and the Belize Coast Guard today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize a collaboration aimed at enhancing military education, professional development, and national capacity building.
The MOU outlines joint efforts in collaborative research, strengthening human resource development within the BDF and Coast Guard through research initiatives; subject matter expert exchange: sharing expertise and knowledge between Galen University and the BDF/Coast Guard; internship placements: providing practical learning environments for Galen students and faculty and joint workshops: enhancing national resilience through workshops and training sessions.
Commandant of the BDF, Brigadier General Azariel Loria, noted to reporters that, with soldiers mandated to retire at a fairly young age but who still consider themselves an asset to society, simply relying on a military education is not enough. “We have been offered to partner and collaborate with Galen University, they will provide us with some scholarships…and we are in the process of modernizing our promotional criteria which will expand from high school to postgraduate and graduate levels,” he explained, adding that the BDF is making room for more highly educated individuals to grow within a military career.
Similarly, Captain Gregory Soberanis of the Coast Guard said a college education program “provides an avenue for our sailors to grow and develop in a way that extends beyond military education,” citing enhancement of overall skills in critical thinking, decision making and problem solving among others. He expects more members of the Guard will join the ranks of those already doing undergraduate and graduate study.
Galen University proposes to provide academic expertise, while the BDF and Coast Guard will offer practical learning environments. The agreement is for five years, renewable by mutual agreement.
