Galen University hosts Archaeology Lecture on Ancient Maya Kinship Project

By Zoila Palma:  On July 14, 2026, Galen University welcomed researchers, students, and members of the public to the Galen University Archaeology Lecture Series, featuring The Ancient Maya Kinship Project: Ancient DNA, Family Relationships & the Classic Maya.

The event showcased groundbreaking research on how ancient DNA is transforming the understanding of the Classic Maya civilization.

Presentations were delivered by Dr. Christina Warinner of Harvard University, Dr. John Walden of Galen University, Dr. Selina Carlhoff, Dr. Rodrigo Barquera, both of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Belizean osteoarchaeologist and cultural researcher April Martinez.

Researchers highlighted findings from the analysis of more than 350 ancient Maya individuals, providing new insights into family relationships, marriage patterns, and political alliances across key archaeological sites, including Actuncan, Baking Pot, Cahal Pech, Lower Dover, and Xunantunich.

The lecture highlighted the growing role of scientific research in deepening knowledge of Belize’s rich Maya heritage.
