Galen University appoints Dr. Rene Villanueva Sr. as 5th President

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Galen University Board of Directors along with the Board of Trustees announced the appointment of well-known, charismatic businessman and media personality, Dr. Rene Villanueva Sr., as the University’s 5th president.

“We made the right decision” said Kostas Karanikis, Chairman of the Board of Directors, “We have been looking for a candidate from commerce and industry, rather than academia to lead the University in its strategic development, including developing our new campus in Central Farm and we believe that Dr. Rene Villanueva, fits the position very well.”

“Dr. Villanueva has served two terms as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and has been instrumental in Galen’s development over the last six years. He brings with him a large local, regional, and international network that can impact the University’s development” remarked Dr. Cynthia Eve Aird, Provost, Galen University.

Galen University’s Board of Directors and Board of Trustees noted that Dr. Villanueva is the ideal choice to fill the role of President.

“He is a visionary and nationalistic local leader who has a deep love of Belize and has a long track record of service in various spheres, including the public service and private sector and within such organizations as Rotary (where he was the President of his Club as well as the District Governor), the Scout Foundation, the Kolbe Foundation, and the Love Foundation. He is also a successful entrepreneur and an excellent communicator. As President, he is well-placed to lead the University in its continued development,” Galen University said in a statement.

Dr. Villanueva is Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of RSV Media Centre. He is also the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Perú in Belize among other commendable appointments and lifetime achievements.

“I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to serve as President of this prestigious University. I look forward to this new challenge of ensuring Galen University continues to play its pivotal role in the deliverance and advancement of tertiary education in our beloved country.” said President Villanueva.

“I look forward to working with President Dr. Villanueva” said Dr. Marcelino Avila, Chairman, Board of Trustees. “He possesses a deep understanding of our national identity, diverse perspectives and needs, and appreciates the role a leading University like Galen can and will play in transforming the social, political and economic institutions in Belize,” Dr. Villanueva asserted.
