By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 21-year-old construction worker from Fuller’s Alley was fined $505 after pleading guilty to possession of a small quantity of suspected cocaine.
Jaden Leonard August, also known as “Twin,” appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug for 0.17 grams of suspected cocaine.
August pleaded guilty to the charge and was handed a non-custodial sentence of a $500 fine plus $5 in court costs.
He was ordered to pay the fine by June 15, 2026, in default of which he will serve two months imprisonment.
Before sentence was passed, August reportedly told the court that he had seen the item on the ground, picked it up, and kept it without realizing it contained cocaine.
The drug was allegedly discovered on April 5, 2026, at around 10:10 a.m., when officers were on mobile patrol along Cemetery Road, Belize City.
Police said their attention was drawn to August, who was riding a bicycle shirtless, wearing pants and black slippers.
He was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of a small plastic bag containing a blue straw in his front right pants pocket.
The straw reportedly contained the substance later identified as 0.17 grams of suspected cocaine.
Following the discovery, August was escorted to Precinct 1 Police Station, where he was later formally charged.
The conviction now leaves the young man owing the court, with the possibility of two months behind bars if the fine is not paid by the deadline.
