
Everton have to believe it is darkest before the dawn after the 10-point penalty hanging around their necks gave a precautionary little extra squeeze just as they were looking to try to slip out of its grasp. With Luton winning against Brighton, their failure to snatch the points from an even contest at Fulham saw them pulled, for now, into the precarious waters of the relegation zone.
A determined performance by Jordan Pickford at least ensured Everton got a point to show for their troubles but undoubtedly the bigger battle lies ahead. Their appeal against their deduction is due to get under way on Wednesday in a hearing that is expected to last three days – although the verdict and any subsequent adjustment to the table will not take place until the middle of February.
