By Zoila Palma: The campaign “Healthy River, Healthy Environment, Healthy People” continues to build momentum across the Belize River Valley.
Last week, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) carried out community outreach activities aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting the Belize River and its watershed.
FCD’s Environmental Educator led a house-to-house sensitization drive targeting adults in the Belize River Valley.
Residents were informed about the value of the river as a vital water resource, the three main threats it faces—garbage pollution, grey water discharge, and deforestation—and practical steps they can take to help preserve it.
At the same time, FCD’s Extension Technician conducted site visits to community forest nurseries in Valley of Peace and Bermudian Landing. A total of 305 Bitz (local Bri Bri) seeds were collected and planted in the Belize River Valley nursery, which will later support reforestation and riparian restoration efforts.
This initiative is supported under the GEF-6 project, “Integrated Management of Production Landscape to Deliver Multiple Global Environmental Benefits,” led by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management.
The program is carried out in collaboration with several key partners, including FCD, the Belize Livestock Producers Association, the Hydrology Unit, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, the Belize Forest Department, and the Belize National Biodiversity Office.
