By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD)s Environmental Educator engaged more than 100 students in Toledo in discussions on human impacts on our forests.

Through a dynamic 45-minute “Healthy Forest, Healthy People, Healthy Community,” presentation, students learned about:

The importance of forests,

The interconnectivity between humans, wildlife, and forests, and

How to become dedicated stewards of forests

“We are grateful for the invitation extended to us by the Julian Cho Society to reach out to students at the St. Vicente RC School, Na Luum Ca Government School, and San Jose RC School, and for the additional support provided by the Toledo Alcalde Association (TAA) representative,” FCD noted.

Forests cover almost 1/3 of the Earth’s land surface and are critical ecosystems, providing habitats for most of the planet’s species and livelihoods for nearly one billion people.

Healthy forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks, absorbing billions of metric tonnes of CO2 annually.

However, they are under threat due to deforestation and degradation.
