By Zoila Palma: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) continued its Belize River Outreach Campaign last week, engaging students and teachers from seven primary schools across the lower Belize River area in the Belize District.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the current state of the river and the key environmental threats it faces, while inspiring young people to take an active role in river conservation through community participation.
During the week-long campaign, a total of 189 students—including 108 boys and 81 girls—along with 13 teachers took part in educational sessions led by FCD’s Environmental Educator.
Through interactive discussions and activities, participants learned about the importance of maintaining a healthy river ecosystem and how pollution, deforestation, and poor waste management affect water quality and local livelihoods. The outreach operates under the campaign’s theme, “Healthy River, Healthy Environment, Healthy People.”
The program is part of the GEF-6 project, “Integrated Management of Production Landscapes to Deliver Multiple Global Environmental Benefits,” led by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management, with financial support from UNDP Belize and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
