By Zoila Palma: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported that the “Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages” category recorded an inflation rate of 1.6% in August 2025.
Rising costs across both food and beverage sub-categories contributed to the increase, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
Food prices rose an average of 1.1%, driven by higher costs for cereal products such as bread and bakery items, which went up 2.2%, and fresh meats including pork, beef, and poultry, which increased by 3.1%.
Specific items saw notable jumps, with beef steak rising from $9.79 to $10.84 per pound (10.7%), chicken breast from $4.49 to $4.87 per pound (8.5%), and whole chicken from $3.17 to $3.21 per pound (1.2%).
Non-alcoholic beverages were up 4.4% overall, led by higher prices for purified water (6.4%), soft drinks (3%), and fruit and vegetable juices (7.9%).
