By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have confirmed that 35-year-old Frederick Wagner, currently on remand for the attempted murder of his estranged common-law wife, 61-year-old Dawn Bernard, was temporarily removed from the Belize Central Prison to be interviewed by the Gender-Based Violence Responsive Investigative Unit (GBVRIU) as part of an ongoing murder investigation.

Wagner, who was arraigned on Friday, November 14, 2025, for attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm, was escorted early Tuesday morning from the prison to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where GBVRIU officers conducted an interview with him. Authorities have not disclosed the contents of that interview.

By 1:00 p.m., Wagner was returned to the court holding area and subsequently taken back to prison, where he remains on remand until his next scheduled court appearance on January 5, 2026.

Police investigations intensified after Bernard, who was hospitalized with severe burn injuries sustained on November 10, died days later while receiving treatment.

According to police reports, officers patrolling Lakeview Street around 8:00 p.m. that night saw Bernard emerge from a house engulfed in flames, suffering from extensive burns. She was immediately rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Wagner, identified as her estranged common-law husband, was detained the same night and later charged.

With Bernard’s death, investigators are now determining whether Wagner’s initial attempted murder charge will be upgraded to murder. Police say the circumstances surrounding Bernard’s fatal burns remain under active investigation.

Wagner was originally denied bail and remains at the Belize Central Prison as authorities continue compiling evidence in the case.

The nation now awaits confirmation of whether additional or upgraded charges will be brought against him.
