By Aaron Humes: Police report that a group of six men broke into the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) station at Central Farm around 3:00 a.m., tying up security personnel to facilitate a vehicle heist. The suspects made off with four government-owned pickup trucks — a total of three Toyota Hilux and one Nissan Frontier.
The thieves drove westward, but their plans were thwarted thanks to a sophisticated “geo-fencing” feature integrated into the GPS trackers of all four Ministry vehicles. This technology is designed to prevent vehicles from leaving the country without proper authorization. As a result, two of the Toyota Hilux pickups automatically shut down at the Guatemalan border in Arenal Village, halting the thieves’ progress.
Police Special Patrol Unit (SPU) intercepted the remaining vehicles after receiving urgent alerts. Shots were exchanged between law enforcement and the suspects, who ultimately abandoned the vehicles and fled into the nearby bush.
Police have confirmed the successful recovery of all four stolen vehicles. Investigations are ongoing; however, no arrests have been made thus far.
In a related incident, just shortly after the initial theft, San Ignacio Police received information at approximately 3:47 a.m. and rushed to assist their colleagues in Benque, who were also responding to reports of an armed vehicle theft from the Ministry of Agriculture. Upon arrival, they discovered a white Isuzu D-Max with license plate BZB-1905 and secured the vehicle, although no suspects were found during a thorough search of the area.
