CHAKRA (Indo-Caribbean Publications), the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre (ICC), and anthropologist/editor Kumar Mahabir present the 284th ICC weekly Sunday Thought Leaders’ Public Forum entitled “Girmitiyalogy: An emerging new academic discipline on Indian Indentureship and its legacies,” with the participation of Shardhanand Singh (Netherlands/ Suriname), Chan Choenni (Netherlands/ Suriname), Archana Tewari (India), and Dennis Ramdahin (USA/Trinidad).

This event, followed by a Q&A session, takes place on Sunday, November 2, 2025. (2:00pm New York), (3:00pm Toronto/ Trinidad/ Guyana/ Martinique/ Guadeloupe), (4:00pm Suriname), (7:00pm England), (8:00pm Netherlands), (9:00pm South Africa), (11:00pm Mauritius), (Mon 12:30am, India), (Mon 8:00am Fiji).

SPEAKERS:

PROF. SHARDHANAND SINGH (Netherlands/ Suriname) – Graduating as a Professor of Girmitiyalogy and Migration Studies at EIMT Zurich, he introduced Girmitiyalogy (Girmitiyalogy.com) as a field of study at Lucknow University, India.

PROF. CHAN CHOENNI (Netherlands/ Suriname) – He has been conducting research on archival records of emigration agencies in Calcutta related to Indian indentured labourers (Girmitiyas) who left India between 1834 and 1917.

DR. ARCHANA TEWARI (India) – Former Head and Professor of the Department of Western History at the University of Lucknow, she specializes in the Old Indian Diaspora and is a regular participant in International Indian Diaspora Conferences.

DENNIS RAMDAHIN (USA/Trinidad) – Co-founder of the Global Girmit Association, he develops statistical analyses and correlations of migration of indentured labourers and British colonial policies that created poverty and famine in India.
