By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister of Belize, John Briceño, addressed the changing landscape of energy ownership in the country, focusing on the strategic transformations within Fortis Inc., a leading energy provider, from which his government will acquire the remaining 33 percent equity in Belize Electricity Limited (BEL).

According to the Prime Minister, Fortis has shifted its focus from energy production to distribution and transmission, leading to significant divestments from Canadian operations, including a move away from the Belizean market: “They are moving away from production, to just distribution and transmission. They have been selling out all their plants in Canada. And, at the same time they have decided to move out of the region. Their first investment out of Canada was Belize, and then they went to Turks and Caicos. They sold those operations, and now also their strategy was to exit Belize because of the change in strategy of the company.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that these changes are not driven by climate change concerns but rather by a strategic pivot in the company’s direction. “But like in everything – a meteorite can hit Belize. These things exist in business. You make your projections, and from the projections we can see that it is a safe investment and most importantly, [Belize needs to be] able to be the true masters of their own energy,” he noted.

Currently, more than three-quarters of Belize’s energy is controlled by foreign entities, almost half coming from the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) of Mexico and a significant portion from Fortis Belize. The Prime Minister expressed a commitment to increasing local ownership in Belize’s energy sector to enhance national autonomy over vital resources.
